Chinese New Year Party in SF

January 30th, 2007 · Justin Bugajski · No Comments

On Saturday, March 3rd please join the MSU Alumni Group to help Celebrate the New Chinese Year with a Parade to be held in Chinatown in San Francisco. We will begin the day at 4pm at the San Francisco Brewing Co. on 155 Columbus Ave. in the City. From there we will head over to Chinatown to see some of the Chinatown Community Street Fair, where we will experience the sights and sounds of Chinatown, with Chinese cultural arts such as lantern and kite making, calligraphy, fine arts demonstrations, folk dance, and puppet shows.

Chinese New Year is a two week spring festival celebrated for over 5,000 years in China. The San Francisco Chinese New Year celebration originated in the 1860’s during the Gold Rush days and is now the largest Asian event in North America as well as the largest general market event in Northern California.

Named one of the world’s top ten parades, The Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco is the largest celebration of its kind outside of Asia. Over 100 units will participate in the parade, many of the floats and specialty units will feature the theme of this year’s Chinese sign, the Pig/Boar.

Nowhere in the world will you see a lunar New Year parade with more gorgeous floats, elaborate costumes, ferocious lions, and exploding firecrackers. Some of the parade highlights include elaborately decorated floats, school marching bands, martial arts group, stilt walkers, lion dancers, Chinese acrobatics, the newly crowned Miss Chinatown USA and the Golden Dragon. The Golden Dragon is over 201 feet long and is always featured at the end of the parade as the grand finale and will be accompanied by over 600,000 firecrackers!

If you are interested in coming to the Parade, please RSVP by posting a string to this event or you can email Scott Chinoski to let me know that you are coming. Hope to see you there!

PS: Please try and make sure to wear some MSU apparel as we will try to get a very good shot to submit to the Alumni Magazine because of the uniqueness of this event.
