The Spartans gave up two quick goals but came back with four unanswered in a 4-2 victory over Maine in an NCAA Frozen Four semifinal Thursday afternoon at the Scottrade Center.
The Spartans avenged a loss to Maine in a regional final last season and will play for the national title at 7 p.m. Saturday against Boston College. MSU will be the underdogs, despite a 7-2 record against the Eagles in NCAA tournament play.
The Black Bears jumped out to a 3-0 first-period lead over the Spartans last year and won, 5-4.
This time, the Spartans completed their comeback.
Boston College defeated North Dakota yesterday 6-4 in the other semifinal. It’s the fifth trip to the final for the Spartans, but the first since 1987, when MSU’s bid for back-to-back championships came up short. It’s also the first trip for Comley since 1991.
“But it’s the first for me wearing the Green and White, so it means a lot,” said Comley, 60, who led Northern Michigan to the title in ‘91 and could become the third coach in history to win it all with two schools.
