MSU vs Cal - Labor Day Weekend

The MSU Alumni Association of the San Francisco Bay Area is pleased to welcome all Spartans, their families and their friends from across the country out to beautiful San Francisco over the Labor Day holiday weekend!

As you all know, the MSU Spartans will take on the University of California Golden Bears to kick off the 2008 College Football Season. As the resident alumni group near Berkeley, we are planning a number of fun events to coincide with the football game and give everyone several opportunities to check out our great city!

All proceeds from any event we are putting on will directly benefit the SF Bay Area Alumni Endowment Fund which helps raise money for needs-based MSU students.

All game tickets purchases through the SF Bay Alumni Club are in Section NN, rows 55-70.

Weekend Itinerary

Friday
August 29
Pub Crawl
San Francisco

What football weekend would be complete without a fabulous Pub Crawl through the streets of Historic San Francisco?! On Friday night, the SF Bay Area Alumni Club, with other MSU Alumni in the fun and lively Cow Hollow District of San Francisco, is sponsoring a pub crawl. Come with us as we take you on a two hour (maybe more?) tour of some of the fun and colorful pubs in the City.

The tour will begin at 8 p.m. at the Bus Stop on Union St. From there we will take you to the following additional pubs: Balboa, Pyramid, Eastside West, and MatrixFillmore (stops subject to change). We will spend about thirty minutes at each pub and everyone is certainly encouraged to hang out or go hopping further afterward.

Participants will also receive a commemorative Pub Crawl T-shirt to mark the historic weekend. The shirt was designed by a local design firm, and alum Kelly Kaplan ‘86, who has been a Bay Area resident for several years. Thank you Kelly for the great work!

The cost of the Pub Crawl is $25, and space is limited. If you are interested in attending this event, please email the club secretary Heather Lynam at secretary@sfbayspartans.org and she will be able to provide details on payment and will also note your t-shirt size. See you out on Union Street!

This $25 charge includes the t-shirt you will receive.

Pre-Game Tailgate
Berkeley

What better way to show the Cal Bear fans what the Spartans are made of than with a boisterous and borderline non-constructive tailgate on game day?!

The SF Bay Area Alumni Club will be hosting a pre-game tailgate party outside the Cal Football Stadium before the game from noon up until just before kick-off at 5 p.m.. The tailgate will be held in the West Anna Head Parking Lot near the Cal Stadium. This lot is near the BART Station and a short walk to the stadium. Once you reach the parking lot, look for the large MSU Flag flying in the Parking Lot!

There is no charge for this event, it is a BYOB tailgate but we will be selling snacks, T-shirts, and playing games throughout the day. This promises to be one of the highlights of the weekend!

Any questions, contact us through the site or fire off an e-mail to club president Scott Chinoski at prez@sfbayspartans.org.

Order up your game day t-shirt! We’ll hand them out at the tailgate…

Update 8/26: We have sold out of Small and Medium shirts, only Large and XL remaining.

Update 8/27: T-shirts no longer available for purchase.

Update 8/29: We are arriving at Anna Head at 10AM, see you there!

  • 12 Bryan // Aug 26, 2008 at 6:43 am

@Tony - you may want to consider parking in Richmond and taking BART down to the game. Parking around Cal on game days is notoriously bad as there’s not much of it available.

Also, to confirm, does anyone know if there is any fee associated with this tailgate? (ie;member fee, etc) and I understand snacks will be provided but can we bring our own food as well as BYOB?

  • 13 Katrina Hammer // Aug 26, 2008 at 7:20 am

We can park our own car in the Anna Head parking lot (near the SF Bay alumni club) to tailgate, correct?

If you want to park at Anna Head, you should plan on being out there a long time before the game starts… Also, there is no charge for the club’s tailgate at Anna Head. The charge is for the official MSUAA tailgate which is a separate event.

From your map I guess the Matrix Fillmore must be the old Pierce St. Annex where I spent too much time in summer ‘64 after graduating from MSU (free hot dogs one night a week!). I think the Camelot a block away is now an Irish bar, dunno about the 24/7 diner around the corner on Lombard.

I was at Berkeley the summers of ‘82 and ‘84, and passed through the Bay Area to (and from) VN in ‘68, and on the way to the Rose Bowls in ‘66 and ‘88. Wish I could’ve made the journey this time too.
