“Speed Reading the Book of Life”

Did you just see the movie Contagion and are now wondering about the plausibility of a global pandemic? The last time you were at the gas pump, did you think there had to be a more efficient way to fuel a car? Did the movie Jurassic Park leave you speculating about genetic engineering?

We are pleased to bring David DeWitt, PhD, one of MSU’s experts on genomics, to the Bay Area to talk about how researchers at MSU are working every day to unravel the mysteries of DNA and how DNA sequencing is transforming biological research.

At MSU, scientists are using this newly available genetic information to increase crop productivity and disease resistance, observe evolution in action, map infectious microbial outbreaks, and design new biofuels.

Join us for an insider’s look at how the revolution in genetic technology is driving some of the country’s most exciting research at MSU in a presentation geared towards all alumni, not just science majors.

First up, on Saturday, come cheer on your Spartans at Nickies Bar in the Lower Haight! They’ve got bottomless mimosas, fantastic brunch, burgers and beers… need I say more?? We’ve got tables reserved for our group, so just mention that you’re with the Michigan State Alumni association.

Next up, on Sunday, is the Big Ten Picnic on Little Marina Green in San Francisco. Little Marina Green is a large grass area just west of Marina Green and east of Crissy Field. Marina Blvd at Lyon Street, across from the Exploratorium. We’ll have volleyball teams, water balloon toss, bocce ball and Big Ten Jeopardy. Just check in at the MSU table when you arrive for your wristband and to sign up for any teams and games you are interested in. Parking is free along Yatch Road although spaces are limited.

So pack a picnic, grab the kids and join your fellow Spartans and families from all the other Big Ten schools as well. Watch Party, MSU vs Notre Dame

Greetings Bay Area Spartans!

We had a solid group of Spartans for the first two game watches of the football season, so thanks to everyone that came on out! Now it’s time to get serious as we take on the fighting Irish this Saturday.

We were at Kezar’s last year when MSU won in OT, so we’re heading back there again for good luck.

Come enjoy some of Kezar’s famous wings and help cheer our Spartans on to victory! Try to get there a little early on Saturday, so we can mark our territory! We’ll have a few reserved tables and then we can grab more tables as needed*

Please RSVP on our Facebook event page if you plan to attend.

College Fair Volunteers Needed

The Fall 2011 Freshman class at MSU is the largest in school history (about 7,800). Thanks to your support and effort last year, we had a record number (408) of applications from CA students as well as the most CA Freshman (55) ever to enroll at MSU.

The even more exciting news for the class of 2012 is that while the university plans to have a smaller Freshman class(about 7,300), MSU wants to see both the number of applications from CA students and CA students enrolling at State double (800/100). As a result, your help getting out the good word about MSU is more important than ever.

Attached please see the college fairs in your area that need volunteers! As we must contact and confirm our participation in these events as soon as possible, your early response is greatly appreciated.

If you are able to help at any of the events listed, please contact Dan directly as soon as possible.
