New Season, New Leadership!

Greetings, fellow Spartans! As we get the 2018-2019 football season under way tonight, I wanted to provide an update with regards to the Club’s Board of Directors.  After 8 years as President, and 4 more as Communications Director, I have decided that it’s time for me to step down from the board, and allow for new enthusiastic Spartans to take the reigns and continue to grow our club.

When I started on the board way back in 2006, we’d have only a few people at a game watch at Kezar’s in the Lower Haight. But from the start, we were already plotting and scheming on how we could build the SF Bay Area Spartans into something really great.  Looking back, I couldn’t be more proud of all we have accomplished bringing so many great and diverse alumni together over the hundreds of successful events I’ve had the pleasure to oversee in my time leading our Club.  From networking nights, community service events, to game watches (at an official, sponsored bar!), to wine country tours, Tigers, Lions, Pistons, and Wings games and of course our fantastic Family Picnic!

This summer, it was a thrill to finally be able to give out our first scholarship grant – from our own Club’s endowment – that took so many of us so much time and energy to get established. Now when we host any event, there are tons of great alumni that show up! We’ve come such a long way from just us intrepid few back when. A huge thank you to the countless awesome board members (you know who you are) that have helped us along this journey to get us to where we are today!

Let’s keep building on all our great momentum by welcoming Sara Sobon as our new Club President!  I have been waiting a long while for the right person to step up and enthusiastically want to take on the leadership role – and that person is Sara.  She has done a great job for us on our community service events since she joined the Board, and I am more than confident that she will do a great job leading the club as well! Go Sara! I’m very excited to see the Club continue to grow under her guidance.

We have also welcomed onto the board, Shilpa Shastri who is a 2008 MBA grad from Broad College of Business, and will take over from Audrey looking after our bank accounts and keeping us on the fiscal straight and narrow. Welcome, Shilpa!

We still need more volunteers to fill out the board, so now is a perfect time to raise your hand and join the effort.  We need help with game watches, with community service events, and club communications.  And if none of those in your wheelhouse but still want to help, reach out to Sara and let’s discuss!

GO GREEN!

New Volunteers Needed

We have an urgent need for a new Game Watch leader to manage the upcoming Football season at The Brick Yard! 4th Annual Spartan Family Picnic

Calling all present, future and lifetime Spartans in the Bay Area: we are hosting another fabulous #SpartyPicnic on Saturday, August 5, in sunny San Ramon! We had a fantastic Spartan turnout at our picnic last year and everyone really enjoyed the delicious food, family fun and Spartan camaraderie.

Newly admitted as well as current MSU students that are heading back to East Lansing for the Fall semester will be in attendance along with their families, so let’s send our Bay Area MSU students off to the Banks of the Red Cedar in style!

This is a great family friendly event, and all future and currently enrolled Spartans are admitted free!

We’ll have plenty of grilled hot dogs and sausages for everybody, with side dishes, chips, and even a Spartan-themed cake for desert! BYOB for beer and wine, but please do not bring any hard alcohol to this family friendly event.

A big thank you to Linda Lovett and her family who have generously offered to host the picnic this year! The backyard of their home has plenty of room for everybody and there is a swimming pool as well. So bring your swim suits, bring your picnic blankets and chairs and make it a fun time!

Get complete event details, and buy your tickets on Eventbrite.

Watch Party, MSU vs PSU

This is it! This is for the all the marbles! MSU is taking on Penn State this Saturday in Happy Valley for a shot at a share of the Big Ten Championship!

This has been a long season, and it has been such a long time since MSU Football has been in this position. The game starts at 12:30 p.m. PT and your alumni club will be gathering to watch at the Old Pro in Palo Alto. This game is going to be huge and we need everyone to come out and root MSU on. With a win, MSU can tie Ohio State for the Big Ten Crown.

However, if Michigan beats Ohio State and MSU can beat Penn State, then MSU will win the Big Ten outright! So if anyone wants to get to the Old Pro early to help root U of M on, that game starts at 9:30 a.m. PT as well. Call up any Wolverines you know and bring your rabbit’s foot, because MSU needs all the luck we can muster this Saturday. Also, whether they win or lose, please be on the look out for upcoming info about New Year’s Day Bowl Plans as well. MSU will be playing sometime on or after January 1 …NOW LET’S JUST SEE WHERE!

If you’re planning to join us at the watch party, please post a comment to the site or RSVP on the club Facebook page… look forward to seeing you there!

Directions to Old Pro or other Bay Area places to watch are available here on the site.
