Beach Cleanup Service Event

Spartans WILL
Photo cred: surfrider.org

The Michigan State Spartans San Francisco Bay Area will be joining the SF Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation for a beach cleanup event at Ocean Beach on Sunday, October 19 from 10am until 12pm. The Surfrider Foundarion is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of oceans, waves and beaches, and we are happy to partner with them to help give back a cleaner Ocean Beach to the SF community!

If you have your own work gloves and a bucket to haul away what you collect, please bring them with you. They will have some gloves and buckets but it would help if we bring them in case they do not have enough for everybody.

We are using Eventbrite so that we get an accurate volunteer list for planning purposes, so please grab a ticket for each person in your group if you will be joining us for the event. There is no charge to register.

We will meet at Stairwell 17. There is a large parking lot at Ocean Beach so parking should not be a problem. If you would like to take the bus, use the 5-Fulton bus and exit the bus at Fulton & La Playa. Then walk 1 block West and across the Great Highway to Ocean Beach.

Any questions about the event, send an e-mail to Victoria Vandegrift, Community Service Events Director.

Global Day of Service Recap

Thank you to the 40 Spartans who came out bright and early to our Service Day event. We cleaned up Mountain Lake in the Presidio, planted some strawberry plants, and made the world just a little bit greener that day. A special thank you to Chad Lesausky for putting together yet another awesome video of a great Spartan event.

All ages are welcome. If you would like to attend, please register on Michigan State’s website and RSVP to the Facebook event.

Volunteer Opportunity

My name is Michael Cykowski and I am the Community Outreach Director for your local alumni club. I’d like to tell you about an exciting event that we have planned for the end of this month!

Join your fellow Bay Area Spartans and volunteer at the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, 2012.

We will be working to help repair, maintain and enhance trails, and protect sensitive natural habitat in the Golden Gate National Parks. Your stewardship will help create and maintain a world-class trail system for our community to enjoy today and in the years to come.

Enjoy the beautiful view of the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin Headlands while you join your fellow Spartans to donate a little of your time to help keep San Francisco beautiful. It’s a great way to spend part of your Saturday!

Meeting Location: meet us at the Coastal Trail trailhead at the Lands End parking lot at Merrie Way. The trail head is on the north side of the parking lot; it’s the semi-circular area with seating walls and stairs.

E-mail me first to confirm your attendance: service@sfbayspartans.org, and also let other people know you’re joining us by adding your RSVP to our Facebook event page.

Don’t forget to wear your MSU gear and hope to see you there!

Service Event: SF Food Bank

My name is Michael Cykowski and I am the Community Outreach Director for your local alumni club. I’d like to tell you about an exciting event that we have planned for April!

Join me and your fellow Bay Area Spartans for three hours of service at the San Francisco Food Bank, 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm on Saturday April 14, 2012.

Project Description

Year-round volunteer support is essential for the Food Bank, helping them to get much-needed groceries to San Franciscans in need. The volunteer community assists with sorting through food donations, repacking bulk food items, assembling grocery boxes, stocking pantry shelves and many other active projects in the warehouse. Volunteers provide work equivalent to 50 full-time employees, a crucial contribution to our fight against hunger.

Do I need to bring anything and what should I wear?

Everything you need to complete your volunteer project will be provided. Please wear closed-toe shoes (no sandals, flip-flops or opened-toe shoes) and grubby work clothes. Please dress comfortably and respectfully. A sweatshirt or extra layer is recommended as the temperature in the warehouse is often quite cool.

How may I sign up?

Please go to our group’s page on the SF Food Bank website to reserve one of the 15 spots on our volunteer team! You will be asked to complete a simple registration form on the website in order to RSVP for this event.

Can students and children volunteer?

Yes, within the following guidelines: middle and high school students can volunteer for any of our shifts. Group projects and individual middle school students do require chaperones – please visit our Student Groups page for more details. Our minimum age limit on Saturdays is 8 years old. Each elementary school student must be accompanied by an adult to ensure safety in our busy warehouse.

Directions to the SF Food Bank

900 Pennsylvania Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94107. Visit the SF Food Bank website for detailed map, driving directions, and public transit information.

If you have further questions about this event, send me an email.

Habitat for Humanity: Community Outreach Event

My name is Michael Cykowski and I am the Community Outreach Director for your local alumni club. I’d like to tell you about an exciting event that we have planned for December!

Join me and your fellow Bay Area Spartans in Daly City to help with day of service with Habitat for Humanity in Daly City from 8:30am to 4:30 pm on Saturday December 3, 2011.

Project Description

We will be assisting with the construction of a new home for a Bay Area Family. We don’t know exactly what we’ll be doing. But no construction experience is necessary.

Currently only 15 spots are available, so if you are interested please RSVP on our Facebook event page or email service@sfbayspartans.org to let me know.

PLEASE ONLY RSVP IF YOU CAN ABSOLULTELY COMMIT TO THIS EVENT. We don’t want to tell them we have 15 volunteers coming and then not deliver.

Project Site Location and Info

7555 Mission Street, Daly City, CA, 94104

Parking is very limited at the site and we strongly encourage you to take BART, public transit or carpool. If you have to drive, plan to arrive early to look for street parking. The Colma BART station is just a few short blocks from the construction site and easily walk-able.

It’s raining! What do I do?

Construction can continue during rain showers, depending on the stage of construction. Often we will have enough work to do indoors to continue working in inclement weather. If it is raining, please call 415-625-1038 after 7:00 a.m. on the day you are volunteering. If the build day has been cancelled there will be a recording letting you know.

What should I wear?

Wear sturdy, closed toe shoes and clothes that you don’t mind getting ruined. Also be aware that much of the work is outdoors, so dress appropriately for the weather, including rain, wind, sun and/or fog. Paint or other materials could spill onto your clothes, so please wear clothing that you don’t mind getting stained or ruined. DO NOT WEAR JEWELRY – it could get damaged or lost.

What should I bring to the construction site?

First of all, bring a lunch and water. Habitat Greater San Francisco will provide the hand tools and power tools you will be using.

You may bring your own hand tools if you like, but be sure to label them with your name. If you have your own work gloves or safety goggles you may want to bring them as well. Also, be sure to bring your own personal comfort items – sunscreen, a hat and layered clothing for weather changes. Please leave your valuables at home! There is no storage space at the site.

Can I come late/leave early?

We ask for a full-day commitment from all our volunteers. When people show up late or leave early it makes it difficult for site supervisors to properly train volunteers or accomplish the construction goals for the day. For safety reasons, we cannot allow anyone to come late; if you miss the safety talk, you will not be able to work on the site that day.

Directions to the Site from San Francisco
From San Francisco:
* Take US 280 S towards San Jose
* Exit CA-82/SAN JOSE AVE towards MISSION ST
* Merge onto CA-82 S/ SAN JOSE AVE
* Turn Left on “A” ST
* Arrive at 7555 MISSION ST, DALY CITY, on the Left

If you can attend, please RSVP on our Facebook event page or send me an email. Questions, comments or suggestions? Feel free to contact me.
